Candidate for Life

I lead the learning and development team for Amazon's recruiting function, a global group, thousands of people strong. It means I think about candidates and new hires, a lot... definitely more than your average bear. And what always strikes me is how, in business, we refer to people who don't work for us as "candidates"... refer to people who just started working for us as "new hires"... think of people who have been with a company for some time as "tenured". But anyone who's ever worked in organizational culture... who's ever focused on reward and recognition programs, knows the truth: everyone is a candidate for life... every. single. day. Either at your company, or at your competitor's. Engage often. Express gratitude. Take nothing and no one for granted.
