Come as You Are Comfortable
I sit in meetings almost every day with senior leaders wearing a t-shirt, a fleece, or a casual button-down and jeans. They are without a doubt (like most of us) among the generations who were told to “dress for the job they want and not the job they have.” I smile (and shake my head a bit) thinking back on the times I was told this, and the times I passed that advice along to others... in personal branding workshops and elsewhere... It is antiquated to say the least... and bad for business. As companies start to embrace the employee value propositions that their distinct cultures deliver, I want to offer a modern twist on this: Come as you are comfortable. Dress in a manner that allows you to feel more like yourself, because as we know with every type of relationship—the successful ones inspire you to become more of who you really are, affording you the best possible chance to shine. Want to wear a suit to work every day? There are places for that. Want to wear shorts and a tank top to work every day? There are places for that. Want to wear a t-shirt or a fleece or a causal button-down and jeans to work every day? Join me at #amazon! What got you here, won’t get there, but being yourself will always get you closer to where you want to stay.
