The Fear That We Are Not Enough
Among the dirt and rock scrambles, the wildflowers and the quiet colors of dawn, I thought about a common theme in recent conversations with clients, colleagues and friends: the fear that we are not enough. Not smart enough, educated enough, practiced enough... That we are imposters when we start a new job, get promoted, consider leaving a company and starting our own. These feelings rob us of the joy of a new adventure; they keep our lives small and our anxiety high. Most people, let’s be honest, come into our professional worlds feeling like they have to prove themselves—that they were a good hire, that they’re smart and capable, a choice you won’t regret. And we want this. Make us look good! But what would happen if we turned the tables and made it our job to prove to them that they were safe and supported? That they had found a place where they could bring their whole selves to work and make magic? Imposter Syndrome is real and pervasive, and it delays innovation. Let’s decide that it’s not our job as leaders to make people prove themselves in those first few days and weeks, but rather a chance to prove ourselves to them. To provide quick wins and build their confidence. Not a chance to prove our own brilliance, but a chance to shine a light on theirs.
