A Different Story

I watched his car approach on my app. His headlights appeared down the street and I waved my illuminated phone in his direction. “How’s your day going so far?” he asked, as he heaved my giant bag into the trunk. “Good!” I said, “It’s so early though!” We both let a small groan and a laugh escape our lips. “The airport is quiet this morning,” he told me. “Awesome! I’m definitely cutting it close today!” And then I got quiet and remembered what we’re all fighting against right now; remembered why the airport is quiet this morning. “I’m sure people are cancelling their travel plans because of the virus,” I said. He nodded, as we sat at the light, waiting. “It’s already been bad for business,” he said quietly... speaking more aloud than in my precise direction. We are all facing our own battles when it comes to staying safe and healthy right now... Many of us are lucky enough to work for big companies with stellar insurance, have the funds to comfortably see a doctor, enjoy the option of working from home... most of us will weather this and then share drinks once it’s passed, recalling when things were so crazy... Small business owners and the self-employed are a different story. If you have the means, please remember to support them as we make our way to the other side.
